István Íjgyártó was born in Beregszász in 1963. He studied at the Faculty of Philology at the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest between 1983 and 1988. He worked as a research fellow at the Demographic Research Centre (1988-90) and the Central European Institute, Teleki László Foundation (1993-94) in Budapest. He functioned as chief counsellor at the Office of the Prime Minister (1990-92) and as the Head of the Department For Political Analysis, Government Office of Hungarians Abroad (1992-93) and the Department For Political Analysis, Government Office of Hungarians Abroad (1994-98). Between 1998 and 1999 he was an adviser to the Vice President at the Office of Tax and Financial Control. In 2000, he was the Director of the Department for SouthEastern Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary. As a continuation of his career, he was the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to Romania between 2000 and 2004. Between 2004 and 2006 he functioned as the CFSP co-ordinator at the Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, MFA. From 2006 to 2007 he was the Director of the Department for South-Eastern Europe, MFA. Furthermore, he functioned as the Deputy Head of the Department for South-Eastern, Eastern Europe and CA, MFA (2007-09) and as the Head of the Department for Eastern Europe and CA, MFA (2009-10). Between 2010- 14 he was the Ambassador of Hungary to the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan (non-r.). Furthermore, he worked as the Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and as the Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2014. He was member of the Hungarian delegation negotiating bilateral treaties with Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, the Russian Federation and the Ukraine between 1993-1998 and was representative of Hungary in OSCE ODIHR meetings and observer in the UN Working Group on Minorities, Geneva between 1995-98.
